BERTHELSEN PREDICTS LOCKOUT

During testimony in the trial that recently resulted in a $28.1 million verdict being registered against the NFL Players Association, interim Executive Director Richard Berthelsen said that he expects the league owners to lock out the players in 2011.

“Every indication, at this point, is that that’s what the NFL owners want to do,” Berthelsen said, according to SportsBusiness Journal, “and that’s what they’re threatening the players with.”

But, frankly, it’s hard to know how much stock to put in these comments, since they were intended specifically for an audience that was in the process of determining whether and to what extent punitive damages should be paid to the class of former players who had secured a preliminary verdict of $7.1 million in compensatory damages.
