Former New York Jet Larry Grantham ‘overwhelmed’ by efforts to save his Super Bowl III ring

This morning, former Jets linebacker Larry Grantham opened an overnight-express package carrying the Super Bowl III ring he thought he might never see again.

“It was tears of joy, a lot of them,” Grantham said Friday by phone from his home in Mississippi. “I’ve got no words to tell you.”

Grantham had put his ring from the Jets’ 1968 championship season up for auction on AmericanMemorabilia.com to help offset mounting medical bills. But thanks to the efforts of Freedom House, a Hunterdon County drug-and-alcohol treatment center Grantham has supported over the past decade, the auction house agreed to take the ring down, without penalty, and the thousands of dollars in donations the organization raised will go toward Grantham’s medical expenses.
