NFLPA’s Smith the focus of HBO Real Sports Segment

Kramer to ask about growing divide between union and retired players

In the past, HBO’s “Real Sports” has been at the forefront of bringing retired players issues to the general public. An earlier segment by Frank Deford that ran on the show featured retired player Dave Pear and Fourth and Goal President Bruce Laird and detailed the central issues surrounding the $28.1M verdict handed down in the Adderley v. NFLPA lawsuit. Response from this segment was overwhelming and helped shed a light on the issues faced by NFL retirees.

On Tuesday, “Real Sports” will once again tackle the cause of retired players when correspondent Andrea Kramer sits down with new NFLPA chief DeMaurice Smith. In her segment entitled “New Era” Kramer takes a look at the union’s new leader and his thoughts on guiding the union through negotiations of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement and how he plans to bridge the divide between the union and retired players. Smith, A highly accomplished Washington attorney with no NFL ties, is also asked by Kramer why, after years of keeping its leadership “in the family,” he’s just the right “outsider” to lead the union through the storms ahead.

The “New Era” segment can be seen at 10:00 – 11:00 p.m.  ET/PT on HBO.

One Response to NFLPA’s Smith the focus of HBO Real Sports Segment

  1. John Hogan says:

Was this taped before or after he purportedly signed his contract? I say purportedly because no details were released. If his contract is actually signed, it is time to stop talking about retired players and do something to help them!
