Inside the NFL: Nixon, DeLamielleure lead pension fight

“We want to see the pension plan improved particularly for players pre-1993, and we’d like to see reforms to the disability program,” Nixon said. “Unfortunately, most of the reforms we’re asking for now are only going to benefit guys in the league now. But we don’t mind doing that.

“The plan in place now [for active players] is phenomenal,” said Nixon, who writes frequently and eloquently for the Fourth and Goal Web site. “The only way they can help a lot of guys at this point is through the pension plan. They’re not going to do a retroactive-type of disability payment to all the guys. The disability plan just isn’t working for guys from back in our era. We feel the only way you can do anything to make these guys [before '93] whole is to go back and increase their pensions.” Continue reading

NFL Player Agents can’t touch player “benefit” money

If the NFLPA and the NFL institute a rookie wage cap they will have to determine a method of distributing the money to veteran players. It would make sense to devise a formula that is similar to the existing PPP (Player Performance Pool) – another Collectively Bargained Benefit. The PPP is also known as Performance-based pay.

Because it is classified as “benefit” money, the agents should not be taking a percentage of it from the players. This money is different than the other performance incentives that player agents might be able to work into a player’s contract. Some agents do better than other agents at negotiating certain performance incentives for their clients, but because the PPP is a “benefit”, every player has an entitlement to the money just as long as they meet the performance criteria established in the CBA. The NFL’s Performance-Based Pay Plan

When the Plan was first established, there were a number of players that didn’t even bother to take advantage of it. Why didn’t they? Let’s face it, this small benefit is not going to make much of a difference in the bank account of the average starter who is making close to 3 million annually, but you can bet your bottom dollar that for the average pre-1993 retired player, something like this could have made a huge difference if the monies had been put into the Pension Plan.

The NFLPA eventually made the player’s contribution to the Second Career Savings Plan a mandatory deduction from their paycheck – unless they specifically opted out.

It would be interesting to see if any players have opted out. That would not be a wise decision, unless they know some other way to get a 200% return on their investment – and that’s even before the interest they earn on the account is factored in! Continue reading

Goodell: More $$ should go to proven vets; Players will benefit from new CBA

At Fourth and Goal we support the veteran players of the NFL that have proven themselves at the NFL level. The implementation of a rookie salary cap will free up money that can be redirected to not only them, but also the pioneers of the NFL .

We have not been able to find one single retired player that does not support this initiative. As you know we have posted a letter signed by 78 Hall of Fame players calling on the the veteran players to urge the NFLPA, the NFLPA Executive Committee and the Players Reps for every team to get the cap implemented as soon as possible.

Fourth & Goal calls on NFLPA to Challenge the Status Quo

The problem right now is that DeMaurice Smith actually has some of the active players believing that the status quo is just fine. Remember he is the one that said “Our players know the work that goes into making a decision on how much to pay That’s not a decision that lies on the players and they know that. So, in respect to a rookie (salary) cap, I am very happy with the scenario that we have now” (NFL Network, 4/25/09).

DeMaurice Smith not only embraces the status quo, he actually states that the decision is not the active players to make and they know it! Actually, the decision is theirs to make, but just like his predecessor – DeMaurice Smith is already saying he knows what’s best for them.
